Hospital Bed Rental for Home Care

Hospital Bed Rental for Home Care

Bringing someone home after surgery, a hospital stay, or a new diagnosis is easier with the right bed. A hospital bed lets you raise the head and feet, adjust the height for safer transfers, and reposition comfortably throughout the day and night. Bay Area Medical Supply rents hospital beds for home use, and we deliver, set up, and pick up every bed ourselves.

We'll help you choose the right bed, check your insurance or Medicare benefits, and get it set up in your home so your loved one has what they need from day one.

Hospital Bed Rental

Hospital Beds Available to Rent

Standard Home Hospital Beds

Our standard rental beds are twin or twin XL sized. The head and foot adjust with a hand control, and on semi-electric models, the height adjusts with a manual crank. They're the type of bed most often covered by insurance and Medicare when a doctor prescribes them.

Clients renting through insurance receive a full electric bed as a free upgrade. With a full electric bed, you make every adjustment with the remote, including height. There's no hand crank, so patients have more independence and caregivers do less lifting and bending.

Premium Medical Beds

For private pay clients who want more comfort or more features, we carry premium beds from iCare and Med-Mizer. Depending on the model, these offer quieter motors, advanced positioning, higher weight capacities, and designs that look more like home furniture than hospital equipment. Options include the iCare IC333 Premium Homecare Bed, the Med-Mizer AllCare and the Med-Mizer ActiveCare. Call us to talk through which premium options fit your needs and budget.

Mattresses, Rails and Accessories

A hospital bed works best with the right accessories. We offer half-size clamp-on bed rails for rent, pressure-relief mattresses such as the iCare IC30 ActiveX, and support items for getting in and out of bed safely. Browse our full selection of home medical beds and bedroom accessories.

Who Rents a Hospital Bed?

Most families rent a hospital bed for a specific stretch of care, not permanently. Common situations include:

  • Recovery after surgery. Hip and knee replacements, spine procedures, and abdominal surgery can make a regular bed hard to get into and out of for weeks.
  • Coming home from the hospital or a rehab facility. A bed in place before discharge makes the transition home smoother and safer.
  • Hospice and end-of-life care. An adjustable bed helps with comfort, breathing, and repositioning, and makes daily care easier for family members.
  • Chronic illness or limited mobility. Conditions like COPD, heart failure, or advanced Parkinson's may call for frequent position changes.
  • Caregiver support. Adjustable height lets caregivers help with bathing, changing, and transfers without straining their backs.

How Hospital Bed Rental Works

  1. Request a bed. Call (510) 254-3089 or submit a request online. Let us know when you need the bed, especially if you're planning around a discharge date.
  2. Choose the right bed. A specialist will ask about the patient's needs, weight and mobility, and the room the bed will go in, then recommend a bed and any accessories.
  3. Verify coverage. If you're using insurance or Medicare, we'll check your benefits and help gather the doctor's order and any other documentation your plan requires.
  4. Delivery and setup. We deliver the bed, assemble it, install rails and other accessories, and show you how to operate it.
  5. Pickup when you're done. When the bed is no longer needed, we schedule a pickup. If needs change, we can switch you to a different model.

Delivery and In-Home Setup

Every hospital bed rental includes delivery and professional in-home setup. Our team assembles the bed in the room you choose, installs any accessories and walks you and your caregivers through the controls and safety features.

To prepare for delivery, clear a space of about 3 to 4 feet around at least one side of the bed so caregivers have room to work, and plan for a nearby outlet if you're receiving an electric bed. A spot on the main floor, close to a bathroom, is usually best for someone recovering. For more help preparing, see our guide to setting up a safe recovery space at home after surgery.

Once your order and any required documentation are in place, we can typically deliver and set up a bed quickly.

Insurance and Medicare Coverage

Medicare and many private insurance plans cover a basic hospital bed rental when it is medically necessary and prescribed by a doctor. Coverage is usually limited to standard models, and insurance often covers renting before it covers buying. Deductibles and copays may apply.

Bay Area Medical Supply is certified by CMS to accept Medicare. Our team will verify your benefits and explain your options in plain language before delivery, so there are no surprises. Private pay rentals are also available for patients without coverage, or anyone who prefers a premium bed.

Should You Rent or Buy a Hospital Bed?

Renting usually makes sense when you expect to need a bed for a few months or less, or when insurance covers the rental. Buying can be the better value for long-term needs, or when you want a specific premium model. Our hospital bed rent vs. buy guide walks through the decision in detail, and our team is happy to compare costs for your situation.
